'1 Peter Chapter 1' Bible Class

The chapter focuses on the glorious inheritance awaiting the faithful, which should serve as motivation for present conduct, especially while facing trials.

Salutation and Election (v. 1-2): Peter addresses the believers ("elect exiles" or pilgrims) scattered across Asia Minor, emphasizing they are chosen according to God the Father's foreknowledge (a choice based on God's prior knowledge of their faithfulness) and through the sanctification of the Spirit, leading to obedience and cleansing by the blood of Christ. This sets them apart as God's separated people.
The Living Hope and Inheritance (v. 3-9): The central theme is the "living hope" believers are born into through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. This hope is tied to a guaranteed, incorruptible, and reserved inheritance on the Earth when Christ returns to establish the Kingdom of God. The present trials and sufferings are viewed as necessary tests to prove the genuineness of their faith, resulting in praise, glory, and honour at Christ's revelation (his Second Coming).
Prophetic Foretelling and Gospel Preaching (v. 10-12): Peter notes that the prophets of old (like Daniel and Isaiah) diligently searched and spoke of the grace and salvation that would come through Christ—both his sufferings and the glories to follow (the establishment of the Kingdom). This message is now fully preached through the Gospel.
Call to Holy Conduct (v. 13-25): Because of this certain future hope, the believers are strongly exhorted to:
- Be holy in all their conduct, just as God is holy.
- Not conform to the lusts of their former ignorant life.
- Be sober and set their hope completely on the grace to be brought at the revelation of Jesus Christ (his return).
- Realise they were redeemed not by corruptible things like silver or gold, but by the precious blood of Christ—the foreordained Lamb.
- Love one another fervently with a pure heart, having been born again through the living and enduring Word of God (the Gospel message).

In essence, 1 Peter 1 provides a powerful incentive—the certainty of the coming Kingdom and an immortal life—for believers to live a disciplined, Christ-like, and holy life now, enduring present difficulties with joyful hope.
